L'onde bleue

Immersive art / Generative art / Projection Mapping

Akiko Yamashita, based in Los Angeles, and Sachiko Yamashita Grasseler, based in France, present their collaborative work L'onde bleue (Blue Wave), specializing in light installations and projection mapping. Originally from Sapporo, Japan, the sisters use this piece as a way to rediscover Japanese aesthetics from an international perspective.

Drawing inspiration from the rich tradition of Japanese blue hues, such as ai (indigo), mizuasagi (light blue), gunjō (ultramarine), ruri (lapis lazuli), and konpeki (deep blue), the work also incorporates the poetic language used to describe natural phenomena. Words like utakata (transience) and aoshigure (blue autumn rain, describing droplets on fresh foliage) add layers of meaning to the visual experience.

Inspired by Hokusai's series method, L'onde bleue invites each artist to express their impressions of blue—sometimes ephemeral and fleeting, at other times vibrant and full of life—through generative animation. Welcome to a world where the many shades of blue resonate with depth and vitality.
